Image Note: Due to a power outage that cleared out my 50 story office building, I was able to wander aimlessly yesterday afternoon. I happened on a huge group of adolescent girls (and adolescent gay boys) congregated below MTV studios in Times Square, they were awaiting Jessica Simpson's appearance on MTV's program TRL. I was amazed at the passion many of them felt for this artist, they all cheered when she waved to them from a window one floor above, some people showed sings with personal photos, some signs with their email addresses begging her to write them, some cried when they saw her. It amazed me that a performer who I admit I hardly know anything about besides her trademarked airhead persona, (let alone any of her music) could have such an impact on the so-called American Future of Tomorrow.
